This vital training programme empowers communities and healthcare professionals to assist wāhine Māori and their whānau facing mental health challenges during this critical perinatal time, all through a trauma-informed lens.

Whaea Joanne Rama
Led by Joanne Teina (Ngāti Apakura, Ngāti Maniapoto) – a retired midwife, nurse, and expert in traditional Māori birthing – this workshop is deeply rooted in personal experience and a commitment to improving perinatal mental health.

More than Cultural Competency
Hine Tū Hine Ora goes beyond cultural competency, integrating empathy through the innovative tool, The Empathy Game.

Our core kaupapa loosely translates as ‘A woman who stands strong will thrive,’ which is the key outcome we hope to achieve through the delivery of this kaupapa.
Hine Tu, Hine Ora is a full-day programme, developed and facilitated by Joanne Rama, from 9am to 3pm covering:
- Jo’s story of birthing in Aotearoa for Tangata Whenua
- Introduction to Hine i te Iwaiwa
- Mama with lived experience of perinatal mental shares their recovery stories
- Introduction to screening & perinatal mental health pathways
- Korero kaha, scenarios and creating wellness plans
- Ringa Rau emotional regulation
- Manaaki Au self-care, supervision
